Hi,

My PC is powering down on its own with no explanation. I don't think I've
got a virus (keep up-to-date with AVG) so does anyone know what the problem
might be.

The PC doesn't shutdown, it just powers down.

Loose connection, bad power supply, loose line cord? Reseat the lone cord
and/or try another AC outlet.

Type of PC--laptop? desktop? How often does it happen? When does it happen?
IE on for a long time or at any short interval? How/why can you say the power
supply is OK?

Laptop.

Sometimes happens very quickly, sometimes after a while.

I'm confident of the power supply because I've used it on other PCs.

Almost surely a hardware issue. If battery is fully charged will it still
just suddenly shut down when only on batteries (before it should go on
standby or hibernation)?

Possibly over-heating. Maybe bad fan (easy fix). If fan suddenly starts
making a lot of noise it has shifted into high gear because CPU is too hot,
shutdown follows soon after --- means CPU heat sink compound has dried up,
become hard, and has become a heat insulator (easy fix). Does your BIOS have
function to let you watch voltages and temperature? Some do. External power
supply is not the entire power supply, other voltages are derived from it
via internal electronics - if voltages go out of spec it will shut down
immediately (expensive fix). CPU is almost certainly issuing a power off
signal to its internal power supply electronics. It might need factory
authorized service before repeated over-heatings kill the CPU permanently.

Fail while on battery power?

Can only be a loose connection or defective power supply. Power it on a wiggle
the power cord and vibrate slightly.

Could be a "Windows Protection Error", you need to go to the "Advanced" tab
in "System Properties" click on "Settings" under "Startup and Recovery" and
remove the checkmark next to "Automatically restart". This whille give you
the infamous 'Blue Screen of Death' and give you some info as to what/where
the failure occured.
