an error message saying the system is going to shutdown in 59 seconds appears - with information about an informat/system file or something of the sort - and that all work needs to be saved and all windows closed. how do i stop it happening and why does it happen so often and so randomly?

You have the Blaster worm.

Go here and follow instructions:

You need to download and install all MS Critical Patches and Updates.

Then, to keep your computer safe, you need the following:

A good Anti-Virus scanner

A good firewall like Zone Alarm or the built in XP firewall
ZoneAlarm is available free at:

Ad-Aware 6.0 - for removing spyware

Spybot Search & Destroy - for removing spyware

CWShredder - gets rid of page hijackers

Google Toolbar  - for blocking popups

Before running these, do the following:

Delete temporary  internet files and internet history.
