Show what is happening at boot time?

Let me see if I can phrase my question clearly. I'm not sure I know all the
terminology but here goes.

Is there a way to log or show what is being loaded and perhaps how long it
takes to load each item in MSConfig's Start Up list? Now and then I run
into a problem where my machine takes a extra long time to finish booting
and I go into the Start Up tab and uncheck those things that I think may be
the cause. That is a irksome task at best. It would be nice to have a
message pop up as each is loaded. Something similar to the list of things
which appear during a boot to Safe Mode. Mup.Sys usually shows a slowdown
compare to every thing else.

I understand what I have asked but I am not sure the question is clear
enough. If not I'll try again.

Thank you very much.

Hello Jack,

You can download Microsoft's Bootvis.exe tool. I am unable to find a download link form Microsoft at
this point, but you can read more about it here:

Actually, what you're interested in is what BootVis was created for. You
can use Boot logging, but that's mainly a driver analysis type of function.
XP uses "Parallel" type loading at Startup which is derived from
prefetching.
It's not just drivers at boot, but 3rd-Party startups and their services, so
depending on MSConfig is just showing you Non-Microsoft items and not
the system level components. Usually, XP completes it's boot up at around
45-55 seconds. The extended times will come from Security software that
is starting and the other Startups & Watchdogs. Event Viewer, System log
is a good tool for determining if Startup items are "Timing Out" or causing
a lag This is where altering some of the Services that start Automatically
may
be something to consider. However, there isn't a "Firm" list of what to run
and what to disable as it depends on your system configuration and software.

Thank you very much. I think my interest is in the Non-Microsoft items you
mention. Think I will just let it go for now.

Thanks again.

Will go a hunting for Bootvis just for fun. The problem is no big deal but
I was just curious. One of these days I will learn to leave things alone.
:)

Thank you
