I cannot find "Show Desktop" - in other words "Hide Everything" so I can
see the whole desktop

I thought there was a simple way of hiding all open windows

Must be so obvious I've just missed it!

Hi Francis,

Try the following; right mouse click on the task bar and select
"Properties", under the Taskbar tabpage, you should see an option labelled "
SHOW QUICK LAUNCH", tick this. You should see the icon on the bottom left
hand corner.

Good Luck!

Did you try stretching the quick launch toolbar?

There is actually a website that has a free utility that will restore your
Show Desktop Icon. Go to

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_showdesktop.htm

In case you just missed it, it's normally available at

Right-click an empty part of the taskbar->Show the
desktop,

even without using the Quick Launch Toolbar at all. If it's not there, post
back, maybe someone else can help.

Press the Windows and D keys simultaneously.

Do it again to restore the windows that you minimized the first
time.

Automated Edit:

Restore/Add Show Desktop to Quick Launch (Line 61) Right hand side
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or go to Start/Run and type in: regsvr32 /n /i:U shell32

Manual Edit:

Copy and paste the five lines below into Notepad.

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Then save it as Show Desktop.scf and drag it to your quick launch bar.
