should 'system' be a running process?

Hello,
i am having a bout of security paranoia and have 'system' as a running
process in xp pro,does this sound right? sometimes it drives cpu
useage to 80/90% even with no apps running..

all operating system kernel threads.

Recommendation :
The Operating System !! Leave alone.


If the process is "system" this is normal. System.exe may
be a trojan
