Is there a way of creating a shortcut to use in Outlook Express that Blocks
Sender and Deletes message in one fell swoop - so much cr*p coming thru
these days.

Might be time to investigate a different newsgroup reader.

I'm trying to come to grips with Xnews. It certainly has the ability to
do what you want but it will take some time to learn how to drive it.
It's a powerful NG reader but difficult for beginners to configure.
It's free though; check it out.

I agree with David. Xnews is an excellent news reader, but it is a bit
data-dense - a somewhat steep learning curve at first. But it works
flawlessly (on my computer) and you can't beat the price.

Stop SPAM and other malware! Create two mail rules in OE.

_First rule:_

A. In "Select the conditions for your rule" click "Where the from line
contains people", click "contains people", click Address Book, click
the first name, shift-click the last, click "From" button, click OK.

B. In "Select the actions for your rule", click "Stop processing more
rules". This will let everyone in your address book fall through to
your Inbox.

C. Name the rule "Pass".

_Second rule:_

A. In "Select the conditions for your rule" click "For all messages"

B. In "Select the actions for your rule", click "Delete it".

C. Name the rule "Delete".

This deletes the unwanted emails to the Deleted Items folder; it doesn't
permanently delete anything. You might want to set OE to delete the
Deleted Items folder every time you close OE, but one disadvantage: You
could have to close OE in a hurry sometimes before you have a chance to
check for missed messages.

Advantages:

1. No SPAM or other malware! No amount of filtering by sender or
subject matter will prevent spammers; they use a different subject and
address every few days. But this setup prevents ALL SPAM from
fictitious addresses.

2. Few Viruses! Only viruses from those who have your email address in
their address book.

3. The biggest advantage, after checking through subject lines in the
Deleted Items folder, you can delete all the spam, etc. without viewing
them. Right-click "Deleted Items", click "Empty Deleted Items folder".
This way, short of viewing the first email in the list, no other email
is actually opened.

Disadvantages:

1. You'll have to look in the Deleted Items folder for blocked email. If
you find a mail you actually want, just drag it into the Inbox till you
add that address to the Pass filter.

2. To add addresses to the filter, you'll have to edit it, click
"contains people", click "Address Book" again, and add any new
addresses. That can be an occasional nuisance, but otherwise you'll be
creating many mail rules for SPAM.

You can create a SPAM folder and send the blocked emails there, rather
than select the "Delete it" option. Occasionally look in the folder for
missed mails, then delete the remainder to the "Deleted Items" folder.
(Press Shift/Delete to bypass the Deleted Items folder.)

Are we discussing Mail or News messages?

Mail from Blocked Senders is moved automatically to the Deleted Items
folder. In Tools, Options, Maintenance is an option, which if checked,
empties the Deleted Items folder on Exit (from Outlook Express).

Hope this helps.

Mail. Yeah I know you can do that, what I'm after is a way of dealing
quickly with stuff like "You have a greetings card from...."which is a
nasty! and there is a different address each time. Ta for all suggestions
which I'll investigate.

The reply by Elmo gives you excellent pointers on using Mail Rules and I
use something similar.

All incoming expected mail is directed to a user created sub-folder of
Local Folder I have named AAInbox. If expected Mail has an attachment it
goes to ABSort, another sub-folder of Local Folder. Segregation of mail
with attachments is done as a protective measure to reduce the risk of
viral infection. All remaining mail stays in the Inbox but it could be
redirected to the Deleted Items folder. No system works perfectly. I
Shift+Del those that beat the system that I don't want.

My ISP is BT Yahoo and they offer a free Spamguard service. This sorts
mail between Mail and Trash. I check these boxes regularly and move any
put in the wrong box and empty the Trash folder. This means that little
unwanted mail is downloaded to Outlook Express. Many ISPs offer this
service.

Another protective measure is not to use your email address in public
forums. In your case if you are using the same email address for mail
and newsgroups as appears in the headers to your post you are inviting
spam, albeit not so much as you might get if you hadn't added words to
the address. If you reveal your email address the only way to stop spam
is to change your email address and keep the new one secret. My ISP
allows me a number of addresses so their is no cost to changing; only
the hassle of advising contacts of your new address.

I've been looking at XNews myself. Can either of you (or anyone else)
recommend an on-line tutorial or any other source of information about
how to use it?

Your technique permits the receipt of mail only from those in your
address book. Many people (perhaps even most people) often get
important mail from people they don't know. I know I do.

You'll have to look in the Deleted Items folder for blocked
email. If you find a mail you actually want, just drag it
into the Inbox till you add that address to the Pass filter.

Sorry, but if you have to do this, I think the whole thing is
pointless. If you have to review the deleted items folder to see if
there's anything there you want, you might as well have just left it
all in the inbox and reviewed it there.

Although there might be an occasional person for whom this technique
is useful, I think that for the great majority of people it wouldn't
work well at all. I know it wouldn't for me.

Why not block all messages that contain "greeting card" in the subject
line?

The included help manual is thorough, but not of prize-winning
writing style by any means. I know of no other source for info on it.
Doesn't mean there isn't one out there somewhere, though.

OK, thanks.

I've been looking searching around for something too. In no particular
order this is what I've found:

http://www.seegras.de/xnews/
http://www.slyck.com/xnews.php
http://abmefaq.net/XNews_Primer.html

These pages are probably a bit more helpful than the manual, which as a PC
user with skills somewhere between novice and intermediate standard I find
near to impenetrable. But at least it *is* available. Xnews's developer,
Luu Tran only wrote it for himself and apparently the manual is all the
support he gives.

A NG where Xnews experts hang out is "news.software.readers". They'll help
you if you get stuck.

I've found Xnews to be a bit slippery to get a handle on. The controls and
their labelling are not exactly intuitive. The newsreader function in
Thunderbird is very straightforward to setup. I'm slowly getting to the
stage where I have almost acheived the same reading functions in Xnews but
it has taken days instead of minutes as it was for TB.

With Xnews there's so much to configure - a host of *.ini files can be
altered to the nth degree to suit particular needs no matter how esoteric.
I'd like to get an elementary control over scoring and archiving. Haven't
even tried downloading binaries yet!

If you find any links more useful than those I've posted I'd be interested
to see them.
