The other day I accidentally hit a key combination that made the box appear
where you select either turn off computer or restart. Very handy, but I
haven't been able to repeat it. Does anyone know what combo this is?

Press Windows key, release the key > Press U
Press Windows+D to highlight Desktop > Press "Alt+F4"
[OR] Windows key to highlight Start > Press "Alt+F4"

→ Ayush [ Good :-) Luck ]

You may be referring to the switch user shortcut which is Winkey+L. This also
serves to lock the computer if you're connected to a network domain.

See Windows Help for a listing of all keyboard shortcuts.

Yes! That works! Thank you. Now that I know the answer, I recall seeing in a
list of XP shortcuts one where you press "the underlined letter" in a display
to get the menu list, but until I tried out your solution, I'd never noticed
the underlined U in the "Turn off computer" at the bottom of the Start
display.

This is a very handy shortcut. Allows you to shutdown without using the
mouse. (When the menu box comes up, press an arrow to select your choice,
then hit Enter.)
