I am upgrading my wife's computer from a Thinkpad A31 to an R51. On the new
machine, I cannot right click on a program name (from the program list) and
create a shortcut which I can move to the desktop. When I right click,
nothing happens.

What have I overlooked?

Could you have done it from your A31? I didnt know you could right click
a program in the program list. Is the program list you are talking
about the one in Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs?

Go to Control Panel and open Taskbar and Start Menu.
Note: You can also right click an open area on your Taskbar and
select Properties from the menu.
In Taskbar and Start Menu Properties, click on the Start Menu
tab.
Hit the Customize button.

For the XP style Start menu, click on the Advanced tab.
In the "Start menu items" box, make sure there's a check mark
next to "Enable dragging and dropping".
Click OK twice.

For the Classic style menu, look in the Advanced Start menu
options box for the same entry.

Good luck

The program list is the one that comes up from the start menu. I fixed the
problem, found another set of settings that I could change and they activated
the right click menu choices.

Onwards and upwards!

You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know your problem is
fixed.
