No, and in fact using some of the registry tricks (isshortcut) from earlier
versions of Windows has caused other, unforeseen issues.

If you mean get rid of the words 'shortcut', just right click on the
shortcut then rename and type what you prefer or just use the
backspace key to delete the words shortcut, leaving the rest.

What I want, is a way of prweventing that text from being applied in
the first place - something that TweakUI could fix for XP.
That, I would leave, as an IMO vital bit of info. Two reasons:
First, Vista uses a lof of junctions (e.g. legacy "My Documents",
"Documents and Settings" etc.) that are not interactively navigable.
These are hidden by default, but folks who disable this hiding will
find these and get confused when they can't navigate into them,
erroneously blaming this on permissions or UAC issues.
Second, some of the most dangerous file types are supposed to be
shortcuts, and don't show the file name extension even when these are
set to be shown. So for example, a ReadMe.DOC.pif will always be
shown as ReadMe.DOC, and because Vista is as weak on file type
discipline as XP, the "PIF" can actually contain raw .EXE code and be
run as such when the "document" is "opened".
In this context, the shortcut arrow is the ONLY cue you have that what
appears to be ReadMe.DOC may actually be ReadMe.DOC.pif
The reverse is also true - the shortcut arrow is the ONLY cue that
tips you off that what you assumed to be desktop shortcuts such as
Vital.doc.ink may in fact be the real Vital.doc document. Without
that cue, you may delete real files, thinking they are just shortcuts.
There were two ways in XP and older.
The oldest method involved clearing the IsShortcut setting for .LNK
and .PIF files, so that the shortcut arrow was not applied to the
icons for such files. This broke shortcut-to-shortcut logic,
Properties propagation, etc. and was soon rejected as a Bad Idea.
The second method involved changing the bitmaps of the arrow overlays
so that these were fainter, or completely transparent. The IsShortcut
setting still invoked the arrow overlay, but as this was blank, the
icons looked the same. This worked well until patches changed the
logic or content of the shortcut arrows, breaking the fix; AFAIK it
was replacing Shell32.dll with a fixed version that did this.
I don't know whether either of these approaches would work in Vista,
and personally, I would attempt neither, for my reasons above.

I think what is causing the main concern with me is the size of the arrows.
They practically obliterate some of the icons and I notice the arrows more
than the icons. The whole desktop is just a sea of arrows... If I had a way
to make them smaller, or only show up when the icon is selected, that would
be great...
