Been using the desktop shortcuts to frequently accessed Excel files for
years but they packed in yesterday for no apparent reason. All other
shortcuts Word / Notepad / Explorer etc are unaffected.

When the shortcut is double clicked Excel fires up then displays "cannot
find file C:\[filename] (or one of its components). Make sure path /
filename are correct and that all required libraries are available" ....
exactly the same thing happens if the filename is double clicked via
Explorer.

The only way to open an Excel file is to start Excel and open it via the
dialogue boxes. Problem solved one might think, but one of my Word documents
has merge fields linked to a database created in Excel*

Saved, Resaved, New Files and New Shortcuts come up with the same error.

Operating Windows '98 with up to date Norton Virus / Firewall software.

The PC has a 2nd hard drive which I use for backup (last done a few weeks
ago) This also comes up "cannot find file D:\[filename] etc

Any ideas anyone ??

*At the moment I'm copying the Excel database into Access but for some
reason it crops data (about 2700 records with 102 fields). I've tried doing
it a chunk at a time and I think I might be on a winner.

try to re-register excel

in windows>start>run put

excel.exe /regserver

and click OK

or the full path quotes and all (replace it with your particular path)

"C:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe" /regserver

finally if that didn't help try to

uncheck ignore other applications under tools>options>general

Your Excel file association may be lost.

Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes and note the space before the /
mark).

You may have to enter your full path to excel.exe....in that case surround
with quotes as in..... "C:\mypath\to Excel\somewhere\excel.exe" /regserver

If this doesn't do the trick.............

Go to Start>Settings>Folder>Options>File Types. Scroll down to MS Excel
Worksheet. Then if running Win98 OS Edit> select "Open" and Edit.

If using WinXP OS you would scroll down to .XLS then "Advanced">Open>Edit.

In Command line the path should be similar to this....

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT OFFICE\OFFICE\EXCEL.EXE" /e (delete the <sp>/e if
you want Book1 to open.

You must have the double quotes.

Below have "use DDE" checked and this in the DDE message box....[open("%1")]

Application should read "Excel"(no quotes)
