I would like to know what the keyboard shortcut key to
shutdown Windows XP. In previous versions, ALT+F4
worked, but it doesn't seem to in Windows XP.

Alt-F4 closes the current application. Ctrl-F4 will close the current
window within an application that opens multiple windows.

With WinXP CTRL + ALT + DEL brings up the "Windows Security" window which
has several options including that of Shutdown. With Win9.x you could force
an immediate reboot by hitting CTRL + ALT + DEL twice in succession - but
the smae has no such effect in WinXP.

If there is no current appl, Alt-F4 brings up the 'Turn off computer' box on
my XP.

Same here. Alt + F4 is the close program command .. if perfromed when an app
has focus then app will start the closing process .. if down on Windows [say
focus is on desktop] then Windows starts its 'close down' process, asking
you if you want it to shut-down.

Alt + F4 will also initiate shut-down if you put the focus onto Windows.

An alternative is to find the place where the power supply cord interfaces
with the power grid then give the cord a quick rip. Zap, the computer turns
off - quick and rough, but effective.

Alternatively CTL-ALT-DEL will always bring up Task Manager, where Alt-U
U will shutdown
