Shortcut and application replication

XP Home. Shortcuts and applications replicate. It's happened twice and takes
a day to delete.
Over 300MB deleted last time from explore. Nobody seems to know why .
When it does happen it shows the application or shortcut with (3+2+2+2) or
similar after the word
Can't system restore to previous point.
Any body help . Dell can't

Two things come to mind:

When you right-click on a program or shortcut, what's at the top of
the list in bold?

and ...

Could be a wonked keyboard - possibly the Ctrl key. Can you try
another keyboard?
