running windows XP professional, Any program that requires a capitol letter,
(word, excell, internet explorer, Shift + a letter or number makes no
response, it does not make a blank space. the first letter must be a lower
case letter and after the fiirst charicter a Capitol letter can be created.
in word the style changes, depending on the letter selected.

It sounds like maybe your Ctrl and/or Alt key is sticking. Either hardware in
the keyboard itself (try plugging in a different keyboard to test this), or in
software. Under control panel/accessibility there is a "sticky key" setting
that could possibly be causing this sort of behaviour.
Another possibility is that you have some foreign language keyboard set up.
Look in control panel under keyboard/input locales, regional options, or text
services for this sort of thing.
Does this only happen in Microsoft programs (such as the ones you have
mentioned), or does it do it in others? Try it in Notepad, or open a command
(DOS-like) window and type things on the commandline to see if it happens
there.
