I get a very noticeable increase in the brightness of my monitor when I
unplug my laptop and run from battery. Is this an XP thing or is it
peculiar to my equipment? If it's XP, somebody tell me why please. I'd
like it to stay this bright when plugged in! Thanks!

on battery power, the display panel should go DIM, the CPU may also switch to a lower frequency (slower), and other internal devices may operate at reduced performance levels, all in an effort to conserve battery power

on AC power, the display should return to normal brightness, the CPU and all other devices should also return to maximum performance levels

all of these parameters can usually be changed by the user, either in the system's BIOS or through a vendor specific Windows application that enables the user to change the power management features of the hardware

check Dell's website for more details on how to change the various power management features of your notebook computer
