Hi. I am trying to follow the instructions on how to unlink bad
protocols in WinXP. I got as far as installing the loopback adapter,
but the instructions are out of date. How do I find instructions that
are correct for WinXP Pro SP 1?

Thanks,
Rob Solomon

If you want help here, you'll have to ask a more generic question about
protocols. We don't provide technical support to Steve Gibson's web
site, he provides his own.

ok. I'll try again.

How do I unbind tcp/ip file and printer sharing from the ethernet
adapter, and use only the netbeui protocol for file and printer sharing.

Also, how do I close the 137, 138 and 139 ports of the NetBIOS. That
is, how can I unbind the WINS client from my ethernet adapter and leave
it bound to my loopback adapter?

Thanks again,
Rob

On the Advanced TCP/IP panel, select "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP". If
you have "File and printer sharing" installed, it will use only NetBEUI,
if NetBEUI is installed.

Closing those NetBIOS ports is essentially the same as disabling it. I
expect a personal firewall is the only way to block ports on an
interface without disabling NetBIOS.

Does it follow that if NetBEUI is not installed, and one is using TCP/IP
for the LAN, then NetBIOS must be left connected to TCP/IP in order to
enable file and printer sharing?

I had had NetBEUI installed, using it for the LAN (I am running Win XP
Pro on two computers, and Win 98 on a third networked computer), but the
dual protocols seemed to cause problems. I uninstalled the NetBEUI and
am not running only TCP/IP. I rely on the hardware firewall in my DSL
router, and the Norton Internet Security and each of the computers for
protection.

Not necessarily. An all-XP network doesn't need NetBIOS, it can use
SMB-over-TCP (port 445) instead, for file and printer sharing.

However, for backward compatibility, you need NetBIOS for file and
printer sharing. It's best to run it over one protocol, either TCP/IP,
NetBEUI, or IPX.
