Hi all,
I could use a little help here, a friend of mine had a major malware/virus infection whereas it took over an hour to boot and decided it would be best to reformat and reinstall XP Pro on his homebuilt computer.
He setup the BIOS to boot from the cd drive as the first option, when he starts the system the computer acts like there is no disc in the drive, does not get the message "to boot from cd hit any key" (he tried two different Pro cd's). The computer goes to the desktop (no icons) and shuts down error message is as follows.

Procedure entry point SHGetFileInfoA could not be located in the dynamic link library
shell32.dll.

Also when starting in safe mode all of the options are there, safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good and such, however when he highlights any of the options and hits enter nothing happens at all, it's like they are dead links.

I hope this is something simple that I just overlooked.

TIA

It's been in shell32 since 95 which rules out a old version of shell32. It may be a corrupted file or there may be a false shell32.

Also windows has nothing to do with Boot from CD, that's a BIOS function.

Any ideas on how he can possibly boot even in safe mode so this can be corrected?
and do you think that the BIOS problem and the corrupted shell32 might be related, maybe by a power spike or something like that? I'm sure he knows how to setup the BIOS for a cd boot, he's the one who built the computer, I think I'll ask him to let me look at it I hate second hand info. there is always something missing from the info. one receives by word of mouth.
Thanks again!

Boot from CD is entirely a hardware/bios thing. I can only hypothsis that the hard drive or controler is faulty and the BIOS is hanging on this. But I have no confidence in my hypothsis.

Try a boot floppy (if he has a floppy drive)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Install windows in a new folder. This allows access to the old windows. What does the BIOS boot screen say, he may need to turn off Quite Boot (or whatever his BIOS calls it - you know no Mfg's logo).

Also corrupted files should refuse to load but seem to sometimes.

If you want to start the system in Safe Mode then assuming the HD is
still working then do this:

1) Switch off and Switch On the system
2) Keep pressing F8 until it gets you to DOS like screen (Black
screen/white characters)
3) Use up-arrow key to go to Safe mode boot.
4) Now watch your system in safe mode (the screen will be odd but that
is the idea)

hth

I'll pass this along, Thanks David.
