Sharing "read only" - can only access some of my files

I have a network between my desktop (Windows XP Pro, SP2) and several
other computers in my house (Windows 2000 & XP), all in the same
workgroup. I share my directory (read only) with all my digital photos
on my windows XP computer. On 3 different computers, running windows
XP & 2000, I cannot access all of the photos. This is what is weird, I
can access some of them, maybe 10-20%. There are no file permissions
or anything (my computer's partition is FAT32). And it's not just
images, it happens with all files. I end up having to copy the files I
want to share to a "full control" share just so people can read them.

Can anyone tell me what's going on? I've been trying to figure this
out for months now. I'd be very grateful if anyone has any ideas.

Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

By any chance, is KB885250 in your Windows Update history?

I just searched my update history and I do not have this update
installed. I read the URL you supplied and my problem is a bit
different. I can access some of the files from another PC but not all
of them. There doesn't seem to be any difference between the files I
can access and those I cannot.

Michael,

Well, if you'll Google for "885250", you may find a few symptoms in stories like
yours. Except for the FAT bit, anyway. Not a lot of folks using FAT - why are
you? I'll do some poking around, but you might be better off with NTFS, more
folks use it so you'll get more support.
