sharing Outlook Express on network with 98 + XP

My IE6 and Outlook Express 6 came pre-installed with my
OEM version of Windows XP.
I want two other PCs on my network to share my Outlook
Express 6 but they are running 98 and the OE6 on my XP
machine won't open on the 98 machines (comes up with an
MSDOS icon which indicates compatibility problem)
OE6 that came with XP won't allow me to change
compatability setting so I want to uninstall IE6/OE6 and
then re-install a freestanding version (ie not part of
the XP suite) so I can set the compatibility to Win 98 to
allow other machines on our home/office network (3
machines) to share OE6 on the mother machine.
How can I safely uninstall and re-install IE6/OE6 like
this without losing all my e-mails and folder structure?

Outlook Express is not designed to do that... One solution is...

If you simply want to share a single email account setup each machine to leave mail on the server.
One client, however, should be configured to act as the "master" and have the ability to remove
messages from the server after X days. I use this strategy so my wife and I can share one email
account between two XP Pro machines. We do that with Outlook 2003, but its basically the same with
Outlook Express or other versions of Outlook.

Point each of the computers to the mail server at your ISP. Then on one computer go to "Tools ->
Accounts", highlight the email account, select "Properties -> Advanced", and check the box to "Leave
a copy of messages on the server". DO NOT check the "Remove from server after X day(s)" box. On the
other computer go to "Tools -> Accounts", highlight the email account, select "Properties ->
Advanced" and check the box to "Leave a copy of messages on the server". Check the "Remove from
server after X day(s)" box and select how many days to leave messages on the server. That way all
computers can read the mail, but only one controls when and/or if the messages are actually deleted
off of the server.

This would be OK for reading inbound messages but I need
my staff to be able to access all the e-mails we've
received in the past 12 months which are filed in OE6 on
the mother machine. So the daughter machines have to be
able to access the setup on the mother machine.

We almost got it working, found that the daughters can
access the OE6 folder and .exe file on the mother machine
but it won't run because the daughters are running Win 98
but Outlook Express on the mother which is running XP is
locked into XP compatibility because it is part of the XP
package. With freestanding installations of IE6/Outlook
Express you can set the Properties compatibility setting
to Win 98 so the program will run on both 98 and XP
machines on the network.

Does Outlook 2003 have a compatibility setting? Maybe I
could install this and use it instead.
