Sharing O/Express?

i run a class of 16 PC's on a shared profile + shared email account

unfortunately o/express cannot use network drive

the shared email account works fine since this is saved in the profile - but
the message store folder is saved on the machine (so each machine is
different)

any clues to sharing the the same store folder?

Try an Outlook Express newsgroup.

The question involves experience of Outlook Express AND experience of
Windows XP profile management/registry - hence the post

In fact i anticipate the real answer is beyond O/Express users (being
totally outside it's design use) and will come from a person who is
experienced in XP profile/registry management

I beg to disagree. The design of OE is such that its
data store must reside on a local drive. It is inherently
unsuitable for sharing and no matter of registry tweaking
or profile management will change this. However, I still
think that the best advice on the topic will come from
OE experts. They hang out in the OE newsgroup.

OE's store root is saved in the Windows Registry. By changing the value
there directly you can use a mapped network drive. However, you *cannot*
use OE concurrently on more than one machine! If two or more instances
try to access the message store through the network this most certainly
results in damage of the store and loss of data. In short, I think OE
is not the solution to your problem.

How about installing a local mail server on your network? There is a
freeware mail and news server called Hamster available here:
http://www.arcorhome.de/newshamster/tgl/misc/hamster_en.html
It supports creating a local IMAP account, which, as far as I know, can
simultaneously be accessed by multiple clients. So, while OE's local
store still is on each machine, the messages of the shared account are
identical for all users.

Help for Hamster is available in the hamster.en.* newsgroup hierarchy,
which should hopefully be accessible from your provider's newsserver.

Hth.

Is not. An OE group would have been the proper place.

Assuming a POP3 account, go to
Tools | Accounts
Double click the account.
On the Advanced tab check the box to leave a copy on the server.
Also check the box to delete after 5 days, changing the number if you want.

If it were an IMAP or HTTP account there wouldn't be an issue.

Use a mail server. Several free applications are available; I like
Mercury/32:

http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm

You can configure it to set up an IMAP server. Only needed on the one
computer which is mostly, or always on. Configure MSOE on each client to
use IMAP. To get email into the IMAP server, assuming you are currently
using POP3 access on each computer, set up the Mercury "POP3
Distributing Client" to fetch the email from the POP3 servers. Disable
POP3 access in the MSOE clients which are accessing the IMAP server. The
email will be downloaded by Mercury/32, then placed in the IMAP message
store.
