I can access files from my wireless laptop to my PC through the router, but
not the reverse. I used to be able to till I got a new hard drive and copied
all the files and operating system to it. Everything seemed to work OK again
but this. I have run the network setup on both computers, checked that the
workgroup and computer names are unchanged and I can ping either way, and see
the shared folders of the PC on the G40 laptop, but access is denied. I am
the only user/administrator, and I just can't get this working again.

Look at Event Viewer and all firewall logs for hints; usually that's a
firewall problem.

That terse reply was worse than no help. Left to my own I found the event
viewer and security log. A litle knowledge is dangerous. On the G40
wireless laptop I found that firewall was not enabled, while on the PC the
network connection page did not have the left frame with the change
connection. Since I couldn't do anything here, I went to the G40 and enabled
the firewall. Sure enough, now the PC could not access this now. So I
thought I learned something and then disabled it again. Only it didn't help.
though disabled the PC still can't access the G40 and now I can share
nothing1

"I wanted to start a new post but for some reason, from this email address no
window comes up for question, so I am continuing as a reply.
I was able to get back the one way connection after losing it as mentioned
before. for some reason there are several networkd in the list of available
networks on the wireless G40. I don't know how they got there. No one else
uses this computer. Is the G40 just finding unprotected nearby computers?
Should I just delete them. When I got back my connection it was right after
I moved the one I named back to the top.

When I go to the PC, there is no frame to the left in the network
connections window, just 3 items under Network Bridge and 2 under Wizard.
I am unable to click anywhere to check firewall status.

Things have gotten worse. Now all the workgroup computers have disappeared
on both computers. On the PC when I try to run network connections, the
display with the folders moving between 2 computers goes endlessly and can't
be stopped without shutting the computer down. When this computer reboots,
now everytime, it says a file is missing from the registry and it was copied
from a log or backup. When I tried to do a system restore, said it was not
available. I keep getting further and further removed from the orignal
problem.

After continuing to try to solve the problem, I lost Internet access. Then I
put in the SP disk to try to restore stuff. something went wrong and then I
couldn't get back into Windows as there was a page fault. I could get into
safe mode, but as I continued to try to recover things, then I couldn't even
get into this. Booting from the XP disk still gave me the page fault at some
point. All attempts to solve things made things worse, so I went back to the
original boot disk and made it the master and wiped out everything on the
other disk and started over, copying the operating system and files of the
working disk. After 9 hours of futility, I was back where I started with
each computer working but not showing the other in Network places. Running
the Network setup does nothing. Neither computer shows the other any more
though they can be pinged. Before today I could at least see the computers
but no more.
