We could really use more detail - what Operating System name and version - XP
Home or Pro? If XP Pro, Classic or Simple File Sharing? Is Norton 2005
AntiVirus or is it Norton Internet Security package that includes a firewall?

Do you absolutely not want to share files with anybody? If so, run the Network
Setup Wizard, and choose "This computer connects directly to the Internet. I do
not have a network yet.".

If you're using Simple File Sharing (XP Pro with SFS enabled, or XP Home), you
could put your homework in any folder that's not shared on the network.

You could remove the File and Printer Sharing protocol from the list of items
under Local Area Connection - Properties.

You could disable all accounts from network access. Disable Guest, with Start -
Run - "cmd", then type "net user guest /active:no" in the command window. Do
you have any other accounts? Do likewise for them.

Give us some details what you have, and we can advise you better.

Hi

I am using xp pro

Norton internet security.

5 computers and a wireless link all machines get internet access from a
router.

I need to be able to see and alter files on any machine from any machine.

But I want to be able to give a visitor internet access via wi fi or a
direct cable connection.

Thanks

OK, you "want to be able to see and alter files on any machine from any
machine", and you "want to let others use my internet connection but do not want
them to gain access to my home network".

If you're using XP Pro on all computers, disable Simple File Sharing, disable
the Guest account, and setup and use a common non-Guest account with a
non-trivial (non-guessable) password for file sharing.

Use fixed IP addresses on your 5 computers, and setup NIS (NPF) to allow file
sharing only between the 5 addresses of your computers. If you want to allow
guests to wirelessly access the internet from your account, set the router up to
allow DHCP, with the scope not including your 5 computers. Finally, set NPF up
with the DHCP scope totally untrusted, like the Internet as a whole.

Remember that whatever your Internet access provides to your guests, you're
legally responsible.
