My boss and I had our computers set up so we could share documents from each
other's computers by going to 'My Network Places'. However, when I started
my computer this morning, I was unable to find the files from his computer.
What happened?

Without more information about the network setup, it's hard to say
what happened.

Did his documents folder disappear from My Network Places? Was it
there, but nothing happened when you clicked it? Was there an error
message when you clicked it? If so, what did the message say?

Make sure that the boss's computer is turned on, connected to the
network, and not blocked by a firewall program.

Try accessing his computer directly, without using My Network Places.
On your computer, type the his computer's name directly in the Start |
Run box in this format:

\\computer

The folder disappeared completely from My Network Places. I was unable to
access his computer directly as you suggested, any suggestions on what to try
next? Thanks!

A full description of your network setup would help: hardware, how
everything's connected, IP addressing scheme, etc. And, please, when
you say that something doesn't work, give all the available details,
including exactly what did (or didn't ) happen, and the complete and
exact text of all error messages. We can only help if we understand
the situation, and we only know as much as you tell us.

Is the boss's computer turned on and connected to the network?

Does it have a firewall program? If so,what program is it, and is
that program configured to allow access by other computers on the
network?

Is the Windows Firewall turned on? If so, are exceptions allowed?

Can that computer access other computers on the network?

What is that computer's name? What is its IP address?

Try pinging that computer by going to a command prompt (Start | Run |
cmd) on your computer and typing:

ping <name>
ping <IP Address>

Substitute the actual computer name and IP address. For example:

ping 192.168.1.2
ping desktop

What's the result of each of those commands?
