I am trying to share files between a desktop and laptop on a home network. I
unfortunately am unable to see the desktop on my laptop. But I can see the
laptop and access the laptop successfully from the desktop.

I have tried going through command prompt and typing: c:\\>net use *
\\192.168.bla bla.bla\Shared Docs but I get an error 53.

Can anyone explain to me why this is not working?

Jon,

An error 53 is "name not found".
<http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...00/server/reskit/en-us/cnet/cnbd_trb_ettg.asp>

It can have various causes. Provide ipconfig information for each computer, and
let's diagnose the problem.
Start - Run - "cmd" - Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window. Open Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is NOT checked!, open
file c:\ipconfig.txt, copy and paste entire contents into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig
listing.

Okay, I hope this helps...

Jon,

OK, you're running Teredo Tunneling, aka IPV6, on JONATHAN. Do you need access
to IPV6 addresses?

Please start by un installing IPV6, aka Advanced Networking, from the list of
items under Local Area Connection Properties. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If you need IPV6, you can install it later. After you get file sharing working.

If it doesn't work yet, post an updated IPConfig.

It still doesn't work. Here is the new IP configuration...

Jon,

OK, now that we've gotten the distraction of IPV6 out of the way (a necessary
step), let's enumerate your symptoms, so we can isolate your problems.

Take the following code (everything inside the "#####"). (Please verify
computer names and ip addresses).

Open Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked. Highlight then
Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is presented, and Paste (Ctrl-V) into
Notepad. Verify, and correct, names and addresses if necessary.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

Jon,

OK, the only problem you have is you can't access DORNBOS from JONATHAN, either
by name or by ip address. You can, however, access JONATHAN from DORNBOS, with
no problems.

What security programs - AntiVirus and personal firewall - do you have on either
computer?

Hey Chuck,

I have McAfee and windows XP home edition SP2 both as firewalls on DORNBOS.

On Jonathan, I have just windows XP home edition SP2 with it's firewall. I
have looked into the McAfee firewall and found 7 attempts from my IP address
that have been blocked.

Is there a why I can allow the firewall to allow me to "hack in" or do I
have to dissable the firewall completely?

Jon,

MPF, IIRC, is like ZoneAlarm - you define the Local (Trusted) Zone by what
computers are in it (dunno if by name or by ip address). You may also have to
identify what level of access you want for the Local Zone.

You definitely shouldn't have to dissable it. Any personal firewall that wants
customers has to allow for file sharing on the LAN (Local Zone)!
