Is there a way to use the CD-ROM on my desktop to install software onto my
notebook? I have spent hours trying to setup a home network with a
crossover cable and I can't get that to work. Both computers use XP (one is
XP Home, one is XP Professional). Thank you.

Make sure that your tcp/ip settings are correct. For
example:

Computer A:
IP: 10.10.0.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: - (blank)

Laptop A:
IP: 10.10.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: -(blank)

Also; share out the cdrom drive on desktop A

goto desktop, and click start---run--- type in cmd and
hit enter...

type in the following: ping 10.10.0.2 if you get a reply
then your in business... if you dont get a reply, check
your cable... it may be bad.

Also do the same from the laptop just to be safe except
ping 10.10.0.1 instead.

If you get a reply, then on the laptop open up my
computer, and click on tools, and click map drive.
for share type in \\10.10.0.1\d$ (d being the drive
letter of the cdrom) and select reconnect at logon.

Hopefully this helps!

I appreciate the response but I have no clue what you're asking me to do.
Is there a simple program I can install that will do this for me? Thank
you.

Connect the two computers to each other using the crossover cable. On
both computers, open the Network Connections folder and make sure that
they show that the LAN is enabled and connected. If they say that a
network cable is unplugged, you don't have a properly wired crossover
cable.

Run the Network Setup Wizard on each computer. It will make all the
necessary settings to enable them to share files and printers.

On the desktop, open My Computer and then right-click and share the
CD-ROM.

On the notebook, locate the shared CD-ROM drive in My Network Places
and click it to access the CD in it.
