Hey all.

I am working on setting up a small windows network at the office where
I work. All 3 computers on the network are running windows XP pro.

I have no problem sharing printers and files in the 'Shared' folder,
but I want more. I want to be able to access any computer's C:/ drive
from any other computer on the network, but I cannot figure out how to
do this. I've tried various things such as putting shortcuts to the
desktop and shortcuts to the C:/ drive in the 'Shared' folder to no
avail.

I've seen small LANs before where all computers have access to
everything on the other computers, not just the shared documents. How
is this done? Am I missing some subtlety? Is there a neat little
trick? Is there some cool little tool I could use?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

In Folder Options>View disable Simple Sharing. Then you'll be able to make
whatever shares wherever you want.

in explorer right click the drive you want to share and you should be
able to share it from there by selecting properties. I dont use XP but
in win2000 each drive is a hidden share by default. these hidden shares
are available but do not show up in the browsing service of client
machines. for example \\computername\C$ the $ symbol makes it a hidden
share. I guess xp is the same. microsoft calls these administrative
shares. You can unhide these administrative shares by removing the $
symbol from the share name. You can connect to administrative shares if
you have administrator privilages but you must type the address in
windows explorer ie \\computername\C$ Its not recommended to share
complete drives for users, especially drives containing system files.
Really its best to share folders rather than complete drives.
hope this helps

Way more complicated answer and not correct for XP. See my previous answer
to the OP. Since you don't use XP, you naturally wouldn't think about
disabling Simple Sharing since this isn't a feature of Win2k.

maybe so, i said i dont use XP, but your answer was far too simplistic
cause he was very obviously confused about how to share a drive instead
of a folder. And as a MS-MVP, knowing the security risks with sharing
complete drives containing system files you should have recommended
against that practise. So next time maybe keep your sniping remarks to
yourself that are simply designed to make you look great lol
