In Windows XP SP2 when you call up the properties for a folder you get a
Sharing tab, which enables you to share and give access over the network to
files etc.

Can you enable the network-style security tab so I have more control . Like
I get on a domain-enabled network.

Thanks

Hi Keith,

In XP Pro only, you can disable "simple file sharing", then access the
security tab to have deeper control over access permissions (read/write). To
do this, check the advanced section of folder options on the view tab. WinXP
Home systems do not have this option.

Is there any way in Home then of securing files down to file/folder level as
in Pro?

Hi Keith,

No, though there is *some* limited security functionality that is accessible
by running as administrator in Safe mode. XP Home simply does not have that
sort of functionality.

In XP Pro, using an NTFS disk, you can go to Folder Options - View and
uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing'. You can then use normal NTFS
security (on a File/Folder's Properties - Security tab) to control
access. This is not possible in Home, other than by booting in Safe
Mode to the Administrator account
