Sharing a wireless connection with other computers

Here is my problem. I have 3 computers, one has a wireless internet card, the
two other are connected to the computer with the wireless internet card by a
router and cableing. I live in the city, so there are many free wireless
internet connections. What I am trying to do is share the internet connection
from the computer with the wireless card with the other two computers, does
anyone know if that is possible? I tried setting up ICS but I could not get
it to work properly. I could see the different computers in my network
places, and share files, but could not get the internet to work on the client
computers. I'm thinking it might be a problem with the router?

Do you have a wireless router? If so, it can share a broadband (DSL,
cable) Internet connection with all of the computers, with no need for
setting up ICS.

Are you tapping into someone else's wireless signal that you want to
share with your other computers? If so, I advise not doing it.

Otherwise, please post a news group reply with a full description of
your Internet connection, router, and network setup. I'm sure that
someone will be able to tell you how to set everything up.

Hello,

Yes, I am trying to use a friends wireless connection. I live an an
apartment, and he lives a few doors down and had given me permission to use
his connection. He has a wireless router. So I thought I could set it up so
that I could use his connection with my wireless card in one computer and
share it with the two other computers on my network, since I cannot run a
cable down the hall into his appartment. Will that work? Thanks again!

I see two considerations here:

1. Technical. Yes, you can do what you want. Enable ICS on the first
computer's wireless network connection. Use that computer's wired
network connection to connect to the other computers through the
router. Configure the other computers as ICS clients. I've written a
web site with details:

Windows XP Internet Connection Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics

Connect all of the computers to the router's LAN ports -- don't
connect anything to its WAN (Internet) port. Disable your router's
built-in DHCP server.

2. Legal. The broadband Internet service providers that I'm familiar
with prohibit their subscribers from sharing the Internet connection
with other people outside their apartment/house. I don't know the
specifics of your friend's setup. His ISP might allow it. He might
be violating the ISP's rules and could have his service terminated if
they find out. If that's the case, I advise not using his connection.
