Sharing a scanner is only possible if the scanner manufacturer or a
third party supplies software to do it. Windows doesn't have that
capability built in. Here's one possible source:

Scanner sharing isn't as convenient as printer sharing. Unlike a
printer, you have to be physically present at a scanner to operate it.

Here are some possible solutions:

1. Scan images into a shared folder on the computer that connects to
the scanner and then access the images from the other computer(s).

2. Use remote control software, such as Remote Desktop or RealVNC, to
operate the computer that connects to the scanner from another
computer on the network.

I have looked at the specs for the MFC-210C, and can't find any mention of the
scanner supporting network use. Generally the less expensive scanners don't.
You have to go to the scanner to load the content to be scanned, so why not stay
there, while it scans? And you can afford to buy another scanner for the other
computer.

Thanks for all your help!

1. I do realise that network scanning isnt as handy as network printing,
however, because i do run a mostly wireless network (with the only "wired"
computer [desktop] simply acting as a server, no one physically uses it)
sharing removes the need for someone to unplug the USB cable from the desktop
computer and plug it into their laptop. Crawling under the desk, fishing out
the cable from the sea of wires, sitting in the most uncomfy position (the
USB cable is a tad short) and still managing to scan isnt the most enjoyable
thing to do.

2. I did think of scanning into a shared folder and by far, that's probably
the most economical way of doing it. I was hoping to hear that Windows has
some hidden ability to share scanners :p. But thanks for all your
suggestions! I'm glad i wandered my way into finding this forum.

3. Is remote desktop a "safe" option to use, will it be easily exploited by
the wrong people? I do have Sygate Personal Firewall and I'm behind a NAT
firewall (using a router).

Once again, thanks all!!!

The default settings of your firewall and router won't let anyone
connect to your wired computer from the Internet via Remote Desktop.
You'd have to explicitly configure both of them to allow that type of
access.

Other computers on your LAN will be able to connect to the wired
computer via Remote Desktop. The user will have to enter a user name
(and its password) that you've specifically permitted to have remote
access on that computer.

Chewy,
From Brothers website, it appears that your All-in-One may be used over a network:
http://www.brother-usa.com/FAQs/default.aspx (See Below)

1. Make sure that you have downloaded and installed the most recent drivers/software to the PC connected to the unit and to your Laptop. Now after installing the drivers & software. Make sure that you have set sharing for the unit.
a. On the PC connected to all-in-one> Start> Printers & Faxes> Right click the unit listed there> Sharing> Make sure that it is set for network use, not local use. Also for the share name, make sure that here are no more than 12 characters in the name of the printer, and it does not contain any spaces.
b. With the Printer on, and after you installed the units drivers and software on the laptop. Go to Printers and Faxes> Right click the printer there and delete it. Then in the same folder> Select Add Printer> Select Add Network Printer> Browse to the PC that the unit is connected to, and select the printer there. Some might say that this is not necessary, but I found with both my Lexmark and Canon, the driver software does not name the Printer correctly. And causes problems on my network.

2. With Firewall settings.
a. You will need to make sure that File and Printer Sharing is enabled.
b.In addition, you may need to Add all the programs (Photo, Scanning, OCR, etc...) that you plan to use for the scanning feature to your exception list in the firewall.

Control Panel> Security Ctr> Windows Firewall Settings> Exception tab> Add button> Follow wizard to add programs.

c. With third party Firewall programs such as ZoneAlarm, Norton, McAffee, and others. You may need to add the scanning to their exception list, too.

From the Brother website:

If you had been able to scan via network however you cannot scan now, follow the instructions below to solve the issue.

1) For Windows XP category view:
Click START and CONTROL PANEL

For Windows XP classic:
Click START, SETTINGS, and CONTROL PANEL

For Windows 98, 98SE, ME and 2000 users:
Click START, SETTING, and CONTROL PANEL

2. Double click Scanners and Cameras

3. Right click on the scanner icon of your model name and select PROPERTIES.

4. Click the NETWORK SETTING tab and then click on the BROWSE button.

5. Locate your model name in the list. Select it and click OK.

6. Click OK to exit.

7. If you are still unable to scan insert the Brother CD-ROM and select the Repair and Install option. Follow all prompts.
