Hello!

I have two computers, one Windows 2000 and one Windows XP Home, that I set
up in a network (workgroup)

I want to use the Windows 2000 as a server (NB! It's a standard 2000
workstation)

I have set up some shared folder on the Windows 2000 computer and I can
access them from the XP computer BUT

I only get ReadOnly access to the folder and files!?

I have set Everyone to full access rights on the 2000 computer but...

I have tried most things but ...

Anyone that have a clue what is wrong?

Anders,

Did you set full permissions in both Sharing - Permissions, and in Security?
Network access requires local permissions, so effective rights is the
combination of both Sharing (for network rights), and Security (for local
rights).

And Anders, posting your email address openly will get you more unwanted email,
than wanted email. Learn to munge your email address properly, to keep yourself
a bit safer when posting to open forums. Protect yourself and the rest of the
internet - read this article.

Access to shared folders on a Win2k machine involves both Share permissions
and NTFS permissions. NTFS permissions can be configured by right clicking
on the folder and selecting the Security tab.

I have full permissions for Everyone in both Sharing - Permissions, and in
Security. I did however read the blog and found that I needed to activate
the guest account using net user. Now it seems to work!

Thank you!

Thanks for the advise. Maybe this is different depending on which groups
you are posting to. I have used an open email address for several years and
I have not noticed more spam on this address than other addresses I never
use on usenet.

I have st both share permissions and NFS permissions. The problem seems to
be solved by activating the guest account on the win2k computer using
net user guest /active:yes

Thank you!

You've been lucky. Doesn't depend on any specific group or server....just
munge your address, if you must post it at all. Since you should expect to
read replies to your posts in the groups to which you posted them anyway,
there's likely no need to include anything along those lines in the first
place.

:)

That will work - but you shouldn't have to do it. Instead on the Win2k
machine create a new user account with exactly the same user name and
password used to log onto the XP home machine. If you do not use a password
in XP Home, create one.

Thanks for the update, Anders. Since you have XP Home, you'll be using Guest
authentication, so that's all you need to do.

And if you haven't gotten any spam from posting like this, you're lucky. But
for the future, please do everybody a favour and think about that again.

Make sure that your share permissions=Everyone, full control.
Then check your NTFS permissions so they match (or are equivalent, for what
you want).

Doug,

I will be grateful if you will explain how the password makes a difference in peer networking. I have found that it is not necessary, but without it most apps, excluding Notepad, believe they have read only permission.

Frinstance, does the file level permission get upgraded when a password is supplied?
