My simple home network (XP Home on desktop and Win98 on laptop with cable
connection between 100Mb network cards) has been working fine up until a
couple of days ago - but not any more! I have re-run the shared internet
connection wizard on the desktop and NETSETUP on the laptop and have the
following situation:
1) file sharing is working in both directions
2) IP addresses look correct and laptop is showing the correct gateway
3) I can PING from both directions
4) On the laptop, software that accesses websites directly to obtain updates
(e.g. AdAware and Norton Anti Virus) appear to be able to retrieve their
updates.
5) The home page on the laptop is set to www.sonystyle-europe.com (it's a
sony vaio laptop) and browse it's contents
6) I am unable to access anyother websites via Internet Explorer - msg on
bottom right hand corner status line says "web site found, waiting for reply"
but the reply never comes!

Any clues or insights would be most welcome - while I still have any hair
left to pull out!
thanks
Bill

Point 5 should have read..
5) The home page on the laptop is set to www.sonystyle-europe.com (it's a
sony vaio laptop). I can view this web page and browse the it's contents -
even pages that I have never opened so they can't be in the cache(?)

thanks

This could be an MTU problem, especially if you're sharing a DSL
connection that use PPP Over Ethernet (PPPoE). Here are some possible
fixes. Any one of them should fix the problem:

1. Install Windows XP Service Pack 1 or 2 on the ICS host computer.

2. Find the right MTU setting on the client computer, as shown here:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/article04-107

and then make the setting manually on the client computer, or use
DrTCP to make it:

http://www.dslreports.com/front/drtcp.html

3. Download the free RASPPPoE program and install it on the host
computer. Use it instead of XP's PPPoE program. Details at these
sites:

Thanks for your insight. I have performed the 'Ping' tests described in the
article and found that the 1454 value is the one that worked. However I have
some queries:
a) How do I know if my ISP connection is using PPPoE? Under 'networking' in
the dial up connectio properties it shows the connection type to be "PPP:
Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet' - is that PPPoE?
b) I note from the Microsoft article that the problem was solved by XP SP1 -
and I have both SP1 and SP2 installed on the desktop so should I have be
having this problem?
c) Nevertheless, I tried to implement the registry modification by following
the instructions for Win98/ME in the 'Annoyances' article, none of the
DriverDesc strings were set to "TCP/IP". What I did do was to assume that I
should be adding the MAXMTU string to the registry entry that was associated
with my network card - but that has not fixed the problem.

Any thoughts/suggestions?
thanks
Bill
