Hey guys...
Go easy on me as I am new to networking.. I just setup a network in our
house with two computers (currently, more coming) and an X-Box. It is setup
using two routers, one wired, one wireless.

Computer 1 is running Windows XP Pro, and Computer 2 is running Windows XP
Home. While on C1 I am able to use C2's printer and access all shared drives.
BUT when using C2 to acces C1 I am prompted to signin with a user/pass... but
the problem is I did not set one on C1 and have no idea why it is asking for
it. I thought it may be due to permissions being setup wrong on that computer
so I went to My Computer and right clicked on my D drive and went to
"Properties" and then "Sharing" tab. When I click the "Permissions" button I
get the following error "This has been shared for administrative purposes.
The permissions cannot be set."

I am quite confused as to why I am getting this error and what to do about
it? And now that I think about it is that even the right way for me to solve
my original problem? I do not want to have to signin or have a user/pass to
access this computer from the other one. What can I do?

For starters, go back and enable Simple File Sharing on C1, XP
Pro. Open up Folder Options in Control Panel and click on the
View tab. Near the bottom put a check mark in the box next to
"Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)". Now go back and try to
create your shares on C1. Keep in mind that you may need to log
off and log back on to C2.

Good luck

Chico,

File sharing between XP Home and XP Pro can be a lot of fun (not). Is Computer
1 using Simple, or Advanced File Sharing? If AFS, is it setup for Guest, or
non-Guest authentication?

If you have two computers, and don't care about security (how are the routers
connected? which LAN is Computer 1 and Computer 2 connected to?), you will
probably end up using Simple File Sharing on Computer 1. If Computers 1 and 2
are connected only to the wired router, you'll be OK. Except you'll have to
setup shares on individual folders, you won't be able to access C$ under SFS.
