Hi,

I'm brand new to networking. I just stet up a wireless
router to be able to use my laptop remotely. I am
running XP home on my ICS computer and XP Pro on the
laptop. My problem is this: I started adding files to
the shared documents folder before I realized I can share
anything by checking the "share folder" box. (I know--
duh) Now I want to remove the files I copied to the
shared docs folder and I keep getting the error message
the the file is in use or write protected. What must I
do to be able to remove the files in that folder? I
copied over 2GB of data to be able to share before I
realized my mistake.

Also if you can direct me to any good help sites to read
up on these sort of things I would appreicate it.

Thank you in advance!!

If you have a router, you should not be using ICS. Here are some good
sites.

It's a matter of "permissions" where you want to "write" the id you are
using doesn't have permissions to write. Re "file in use" ... something
(a program) has this file open/in use.

Look in Help on your XP Home machine to read how to manage permissions
on the shares to setup. All described there.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

Thank you for responding. Maybe I'm not accurately
explaining what I have. I purchased a US Robotics
Wireless Turbo Router along with the USR PC card for the
laptop. I thought ICS referred to the main computer from
which the internet connection originates. That is where
the files exsist and that I'm trying to remove.

Thanks again for the sites. I'll be checking them out
right now.

Hi Rob,

Thank you for your response. I'm sorry but I can't find
what I'm looking for in the help file. Maybe you can
better direct me? I copied your words, "how to manage
permissions on the shares" and also tried permissions but
I just don't see what I'm looking for. Perhaps I am not
looking for the right topic? Any help you can provide
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again...

The problem with deleting files in the Shared Documents folder doesn't
really involve networking, Ilene. I think that you might get a better
answer if you post your question in the Windows XP "General" news
group.

Steve,

I find your comments about the deletion problem NOT being related to
networking really odd.

I have posted my problem on this NG a number of times and only today has
Mei Chan offered to assist. PLease check this thread "ATTN: Mei Chan
[MSFT]."

I cannot delete a file on my desktop ONLY AFTER it has been accessed by my
laptop (via the network!).

Yet, it works fine the other way - any ideas?
