Share shortcut causing slowdown?

I have recently migrated a bunch og XP Pro boxes from a basic peer-peer
network to an SBS2003/DC setup.
Prior to the migration, the network wasn't a real performer by any manner,
but now, some of my users tell me that it's slower.
One in particular has recently told me that he had a bunch of shortcuts on
his desktop, pointing at shares and various files on the SBS server, which he
moved into a folder, and now the machine is performing much better.
I asked him to open the folder, and he said it was slow again...

I have recently had the cabling certified, and all is well from a bandwidth
POV.
This particular unit is SP2, with the f/w enabled, but with no a/v software
running at the moment.

Is it possible that these shortcuts are polling their targets or something?
I mean I would have thought that periodically, this may happen in order to
keep track of changes, but so much as to slow down a machine when they are
displayed?
