share monitor?

We are considering moving a computer in our childs room. I was
wondering if there is a way to connect our main computer monitor so
that we can switch to his and periodically check on his activities.
All computers...3 ...are xp home. We use road runner and a wired
router

No. You would need to remote into his machine. Put "Remote Desktop" into
XP's Help & Support to read about it. If you don't have the correct
versions of XP to control his computer (XP Home), you can use
third-party software such as UltraVNC or TightVNC (free) or pcAnywhere
(commercial).


It might be easier to just not move the computer into the child's room.
It really depends on how old the child is and how tightly you want to
control him/her.

A good application for that is VNC, but you'll need to have the computers
both connected to the router, which I'll assume you do. It's rather
straight forward to set up. The usual setup failures are due to not having
a password on one of the machines or a firewall that has to be set to allow
them to talk.

I use it a lot with the foster kids we have here. They have the darndest
time understanding how I know what they're doing when I've never touched
their computer <g>.

Caution: If you move your mouse while you're connected, you'll also move
HIS mouse <g>, unless you turn off that ability.
