Hi =?Utf-8?B?S2FybGE=?=,
I have a user who when he opened SGML files with Word saw the codes, but now
the codes are no longer visible.
It would help to know how the codes were represented. Like this
<code>
or in pink ovals?

If he opens the files in Notepad, the tags are still present?

My best guess is, that he first opened it as a pure text file, and that now
Word is doing a conversion. Have him check in Tools/Options/General whether
"Confirm conversions on open" is activated? If not, he should activate it. Word
will show a list of file formats when next he opens such a file, and he needs
to select "plain text".
