Sfx /scannow
MY local computer guy told me I could attempt to fix corrupted files by
inserting the Windows disk, closing the “Welcome to…†window,
start/run/typing sfx /scannow and clicking OK. For me, this procedure
results in “windows cannot find†box. What did I do wrong?

Thought of trying Help from your start menu?
Hint: you need to use an account with administrator privileges

Is your Windows original XP disk pre SP2? If it is you will need to
slipstream your original CD and an SP2 CD to produce a CD combining
both. You can use any SP2 CD. These were freely issued by Microsoft in
2004. Many people having older computers have them.

It's sfc, not sfx.

You need to type the command correctly first that if this what you input in
the run command:
Open run command and type in:
sfc /scannow
Note the space between sfc_/scannow ( _ = space)

Logged in as administrator, sfx /scannow entered in help returned 0 results.
As did:
fix corrupted files
run scan now from disk
correcting files from install disk

The reason I hadn't tried help was probably because I'm too IT illiterate
to know what to ask it. I come here hoping to learn.

It should be sfc /scannow not sfx /scannow.

Probably a typo given that x and c are adjacent on the keyboard.

Well, OP used sfx twice, both in the header and body of his post. If he
really used sfx he should have gotten a file not found error of some sort.

Hi Bill,
Yes He/She did got the error File Not found message, hence the incomplete
description:
" this procedure
results in “windows cannot find†box. What did I do wrong? ".
