If I were to run "sfc /scannow" on a
"Hewlett Packard bred Windows XP Home" system,
will this command point to the required files?

Or is this another part of Windows XP, that we cannot execute.

Can you also tell me if Backup is available on my disks?

Or what good that recent upgrade was, when we got the new
Update Manager (properties of C:\) and a link that pointed toward
Veritas, where I was able to purchase the Backup Program?

It didn't mention any of this on the box!

The backup files sfc uses ought to be on the hard disk in a place it can
access. Look around for an \i386\ folder containing files whose last
character is a _

Probably not. On XP Home (which this probably is) this is an extra
'Value added' item, and OEM versions of it like yours often omit it.
But it is not that good - the Veritas one you seem to have got to is
much better. I think this will have been supplied as a bundled extra by
HP, as they also bundle the Veritas CD burning software (Record Now and
DLA) and that the update and pointer will have arisen from that - it is
not something which *Windows* Update would do
