Joe

Can anyone please assist me with this problem that one of our senior group
is having.

" Joe, I have just had a call from Dennis. You may recall that he recently
did a complete reinstall of XP in order to be able to do the SP2 update. He
said that everything was working perfectly until a day or two ago when he
got an error message when Win started to load telling him that sfc_os.dll
could not be found. He got Win to continue to load and everything seemed to
be OK except that he sometimes gets a message that sfc can't be found, and
he has also lost his printer icons and is unable to add the printer again,
and the SP2 Security Centre has disappeared.

It sounds as though a Win repair job is necessary, but when you and I
discussed this recently I think that we found out that it needed a repair
from the original XP CD and a fresh install of SP2 - a fairly significant
undertaking. Dennis almost sounded resigned to a full new installation but I
thought that it was worth doing a bit of investigating first. He sounds as
though he knows what he is about and hasn't done anything silly, and he also
seems to be fairly confident that his system is well protected and clean,
but it still sounds to me a bit like a nasty has got in.

Do you have any suggestions for him?"

Hope all you people had a good start to the New Year.

Hi

See if the sfc_os.dll file is in the Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.
If so, copy it to the windows\system32 folder. If a 'Repair' install of XP
is needed, the following article by Michael Stevens will help:

Thanks Will, I have passed that on and will report back.

Do you think that would overcome the printer problem as well.

G'day Will,

Looks like we got a good result with your advice on this one:

Joe & Will
U dunnit ! Genetic engineering at its best.
After extracting a copy of the file sfc_os.dll from its normal position in
the Service Pack folder and inserting it into the Windows System 32 folder I
went to the Control Panel and there in the Security Centre I found that all
three green ticks were back. However there was still no sign of the printer
so I closed down for lunch and came back later prepared to try a bit more
genetic engineering to get the printer back. On switching on, I was
pleasantly surprised to discover that the warning notice that winlogon.exe
had failed did not appear and I was even more pleasantly surprised to find
in Control Panel the printer was back in its normal place and "ready",
pretending that nothing had happened, that it had been there all the time
and that I must have dreamt it all !
Thanks indeed to you both.
Dennis

( Dennis is getting close to 80 so I think he done well too)

Many thanks Will, your advice is appreciated.
