Hello, I wasin't sure if this is where I should post
this, but I am having a problem with my sound in Windows
XP Professional. Any link or button clicked in Windows
that's followed by a sound, like the nav sounds in IE6
are delayed slightly. For instance, when I use ICQ the
sounds like the typewriter "Click" or the incomming
message "Uh-oh" sounds are delayed as well. This is only
with nav/action sounds in Windows. Sounds in games are
not affected by this problem. I have onboard AC'97 (WDM)
audio, drivers suplied by Microsoft. I've tried the
drivers from my motherboard maker, with the same
irritating results. Any help would be greatly
appreciated, thanks. AJ

I have exactly the same problem. ANY sound, like
the 'ding' you get when you try to exit a text file
without making a save first, will be dalayed anywhere
from 1 to 15 seconds. The explanation I get is that
somehow the DirectX drivers "lose" their DMA connection
to the sound card channel and have to 'renew' it again
before playing the sound.

Try this:

Open up Media Player (any version) and load in any WAV
file. Start playing it, then PAUSE it in the middle.
Minimize the player and continue to do whatever you
want. I think you will see that the sounds come up
exactly when they are supposed to.

I keep MP open all the time with a paused wav file. This
keeps the rest of the sounds running fine.

I will see if it goes away when I get my new PC. I hope
the spankin' new hardware in it will solve the problem
with the audio skipping and bieng delayed. If not, then I
will have to live with the problem I guess. BTW, I've
noticed that the problem starts after I install SP1a. A
bug perhaps? I'd try the WMP trick, but I don't have the
system resources to spare. Athlon T-Bird @ 750MHz, Asus
A7V133 mobo (AC'97) and 256MB SDRAM. If it annoyes me too
much I will revert back to W2K Pro. No problems with my
audio in that version of windows.
