Is there any way to set up the mail so that it does not go straight to my
inbox when I open up the mail? That is how my Outlook Express was, and I
like it better that way, but I don't remember how I did that and I cannot
seem to figure out how to do it with this mail program.

So what exactly do you want it to open to?
The primary function of an email program is to read your mail.

I know that, but sometimes I am just looking to refer back to something I
have sent, or just seeing if I have any new emails, even if I don't actually
want to read them at the moment. I don't necessarily want people around me
to see everything in my inbox. The old mail used to come up with all the
folders closed. I just happen to like it better that way.

It helps when you explain the reason for what you want.
You can achieve the same effect by turning off the preview pane:
View, Layout, uncheck "Show preview pane".

As I said, thank you both. That is not actually what I am looking for,
though....what I was hoping to find out is, how can I set it up so that when
I open my mail, it does not go directly to my inbox? With Outlook Express,
when I opened my mail, it came up with the folders closed and I had to click

If it is not sufficient for you to have the preview pane closed, you can also
configure the program to come up with the Folder List closed:
View, Layout, uncheck "Folder List". However, this will still display the
message list pane. The only other option is to close the program when
a visitor stops by your desk.

I knew exactly what you were asking from the getgo.
You want Mail not to automatically retrive mail at startup.
.... go to Tools, Options and un-check the box for send recieve at startup.
This is a very useful feature because like you, I too don't want to
automatically do anything when I get into a program such as an email client.

Good luck!

Actually, I believe the OP doesn't want existing emails displayed either,
because of privacy considerations.
