When my new laptop with XP Home came I was flat on my back in horrible back
pain. This woman came over to take care of me. Her Son, 16, set up my new
laptop for me. He thought my name was Frank and not Fred and set it up like
that. I have hacked the registry to change Frank to Fred in some locations.
There is still "C:\Documents and Settings\Frank" and the like. I have
searched for a way to change this to no avail. Is there a way to change
this?

Here's how to correct this situation:
Create a new user account named Fred.
Logon to the new Fred account.
Logoff Fred and logon with an account that's a Computer
Adminstrator.
Note: This account can't be Frank or Fred. The best way to do
this is to create a temporary account (Call it TEMPADMIN) and
use that account to complete the procedure. You could also boot
into Safe Mode and use the built-in Administrator account.
You can now use either of these procedures to copy the Frank
profile into the new Fred acount profile:

This is my preferred method
http://www.petri.co.il/copy_user_profiles_in_windows_xp.htm

This is Microsofts procedure
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

Once completed you can safely delete the Frank profile as well
as the temporary administrator profile you created.

Thanks. I knew the answer was a create the right account-delete the
wrong account type of thing. I just didn't know how to do that in XP. I
grew up with computers and haven't been involved with them in a few
years. Computers are now so complex they are hard to use when you are
used to a simpler system.

Glad to hear you've got that fixed.

Once you get used to XP, I think you'll find that it's actually
a lot easier to work with than earlier versions of Windows.
It's far more stable than Windows 95/98/ME. That said, the
initial transition can seem daunting.

Here are a couple of web sites you might want to consider
adding to your Favorites. In the future, when you run into a
problem they should be your first step when starting your
troubleshooting:

FYI, the answer to your original question is covered on the U
page under "Users - Copy"
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Good luck with your laptop and good luck with your back. I
never realized just what excruciating pain was until I started
having back problems.

I was mainly thanking you for the information. I tried that and I was not
satisfied with the results. I have gone back to the way it was before I
asked the question here. It seems that not everything is copied. My icons
were on my desktop, but they were all moved around. The background of my
desktop was not what I had before and I had to change it. A startup program
did not work. I tried to start it manually and it said something like
"Unable to start". I have undone what I did and everything is the way it
was. It is not uncommon to create a problem trying to fix an irritation.
Thanks anyway.

Fred.
