Hello,
I'm having a problem installing programs with windows XP
home. When trying to install Norton Antivirus the setup
application starts then dissapears without errors as soon
as I get to the product activation page. I found the same
thing when trying to install AVG free virus scan. I have
downloaded and run the tools from symantec to clean Sasser
and Blaster worms. I've installed all of the critical
Windows updates. In both cases Setup only stays visible
for a few seconds. I've confirmed his account has
administrator priveleges. It also seems to be impacting
the hotsynch to the Palm Pilot. It connects to the
computer then disconnects with a setup error before any
data is transferred. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

I am having the same problem. It just started recently. I
am able to open the "read me" files, etc. from the
installation CD's - however, when I try to do the
installation - the system hangs (the CD "whirs" and
nothing happens). I have tried going through Control
Panel and Explorer - same results. I also have a second
CD-RW drive in my tower. The same thing happens with that
drive which tells me it is probably not the drives
themselves. I am able to play audio CD's, retrieve data
and burn CD's. It is the installation (.exe) files that
will not read properly. Please let me know if you find
out anything helpful. I am up to date on all the Window
updates and, supposedly, virus-free.

Already tried closing down your 59 background applications you have
running 24/7 before you run ware that mates with windows?

Pam,
Rick Rogers posted some promising steps for me to try in
reply to my repost (oops) six messages after this one.
They do look promising, but they did not work for my
specific problem. I am also up to date with windows
updates and have run sasser and blaster worm virus removal
tools so should be virus free.

There are some installation scripts that are written (badly IMHO) so
that they do close the window, but continue running and after maybe a
minute come up with a progress bar showing file copying, then
eventually a proud 'Finished'. So give it some time

Thanks Alex,

I gave it a try and let it run for 20 minutes and the
window didn't come back up. But it was worth a try.

Pam,

I found the problem with mine, and hopefully with yours.
I was working in Safe Mode (turn on your PC and keep
tapping F8 until it complains, then hopefully starts in
Safe Mode) trying Scandisk and Defrag, then for kicks I
tried installing the AVG virus scan (it may not be the
best but it was free) with Setup (Or Windows Installer as
it's called in some cases). I had read that you're not
supposed to be able to install software in Safe Mode on
XP, but I figured what have I got to lose. I got to the
product code screen and it hadn't quit yet and I was able
to enter it and continue with the installation. It did
complain a couple of times but when it finished it was up
and running and found the following virus which appeared
to be the root of the problem:
Agobot.6.AV in c:\windows\system32\lsas.exe
I ran a full scan and it found and cleaned it. Then I
updated the virus list and ran it again finding no more
viruses. I tried the install again, this time from
windows and it got to the product code screen and didn't
die. So I got out of that and tried loading a different
software application and it loaded fine. What a relief!
I thought I was going to have to reformat the drive and
reload everything. Try updating your virus definitions
and running it again. Good luck!
