I'm posting this in this file because I'm not sure where
it'll go. Hope it's in the right place.

Anyways, the computer that my room mate and I use isn't
working at the moment. It goes to the startup screen, and
usually from there it goes to the XP load screen. Now, it
just goes straight to the setup screen (please load BOOT
disk...etc). We know that XP is still there, because the
CD-ROM detects the XP on one of our partitions. The
problem is, we can't get to the partition. I'm new to
windows (coming from a family of mac fans), and my room
mate is just as clueless as I am. Since we don't know
anybody who knows anything more than we do, and we don't
want to take it to the shop if we don't have to, does
anybody have any tips on what to do? We're ready to have
access to a computer in the privacy of our dorm room.
Thanks!

Well, not quite knowing how you got into this particular situation (what was
done that started it booting this way) I can suggest a few things...

1) As the computer boots (without the CD in the drive) - tap F8 every 1/2
second or so until a menu comes up. Choose to boot into Safe Mode. If you
do not get a menu, come back and post this or continue to #2.
2) With the Windows XP CD in the drive, reboot the computer and Press Any
Key to Boot from CD. Then you should perform a repair installation:

That's about the best advice I can think of at the moment.

Thanks - insert exclamation point, the 1-10 keys above
the letters don't work. Actually, I was playing around
with it the other day, and I figured it out - the Primary
Master was disabled for some reason. Unfortunatly, our
info was gone, but we can now use XP. Figures that I
would fix it after and not before I thought of
posting. ;o] Thanks again, I appreciate your assistance
[exclamation point]
