Hi all,

I have an XP Pro Machine (3.0ghz/ 512mb / 40GB 800fsb) .

We currently have a server that acts as a central install for our anti-virus
(sophos). It also collects information from our PABX (using Softlog).
Indexing Program (ISYS).

I also want it to run iis and Mapinfo's new product Exponare.

Can an XP Pro machine act as a server for these programs ?

I know it's a tough question but a general answer from you guys/gals would
help.

cheers,

Adam

Youre best bet for server applications is to chk thru msdn at microsoft.com,
thats thier specialty,TechNet can add alot of info to.For newsgroups etc.,
check out gotdotnet.com Its full of server info and run by microsoft, plus
directs issues, downloads directly back to microsoft.com

Don't take this as being cynical, but do you see the word "Server"
anywhere in the OS software name?
Windows XP Professional
Windows XP Home Edition
I don't, but
Windows 2k Server
Windows 2k3 Server
Now there's that magic word.

I get that. That was why I asked.

I have a spare xp pro machine sitting here and would like to use it. It's
not running sql server or acting as a file share just some basic apps that I
am sure XP pro can handle.

Ok, but when its all said and done and you can't exceed to 10
simultaneous connection limit, then don't come whining to us or
gripping about MS hardcoding the limit - XP is a "desktop" OS and not
a "server" OS.

That's exactly the sort of thing you should have said in the first place. It
won't exceed those connections, so that's great. Thanks for all your help,
and I promise I won't come back whining !
