I'm trying to network my laptop to my home PC - both connect to a cable modem
through a router: the laptop is wireless and also connects to a Netgear
wireless router (coming off the internet router), the home PC is wired into
the internet router. i set up both PC's as part of a home network - MSHOME.
When I "View Workgroup Computers" from the home PC, there is an Icon for my
laptop. I click on it and get: "\\laptop is not accessable. You might not
have permission to use this network resource. Contact the admin of this
server - find out if you have access permissions - the network path wasn't
foound" When I click "View Workgroup Computers" from the laptop I get:
"MSHOME is not accessable. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the admin of this server - find out if you have access
permissions".

I am able to ping each PC from the other - they communicate. I have even
disabled the Firewalls on both PC's and keep getting the same messages (see
above) There must be a simple setting that I am missing.

Help, Someome!!!!!!!!

What firewall did you disable? Not all firewalls disable conveniently.
Misconfigured / overlooked firewalls:

Also, check registry setting restrictanonymous:

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, and we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:

Please let us know if any of these suggestions are of any help. What you learn
may help others in the future, and that's the purpose of these forums.

Jomama - I have almost the identical problem (laptop is connected directly to
router). I have been banging my head against a wall for 2 days trying to
solve this (I can ping, net view, pathping) etc. Other XP computers on the
network can see the lap top (but not my xp pro compter). I was able to
"see" the laptop from my xp-pro by using the "add a network place wizard" in
my networkplaces, but the laptop does not show up in the list of workgroup
computers. The same technique does not work for the laptop - it is totally
blind to all the other computers on the network.

I have no idead what try next.

Jomama,

How about browstat? That is a key tool in diagnosing your problem.
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html>
http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/browstat-utility-from-microsoft.html

We'll revisit the registry issue based upon what browstat shows.

Jamma - I solved my problem by installing the following:

"NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocal" to the Local Area
Connection Properties on the laptop.

open the network connection properies; click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP),
click install, choose Protocols, click add and choose the above.; click ok
until you get back to the original screen;

as soon as I refreshed the computers in workgroup every computer in the
workgroup appeared.

hope this helps & good luck ( I for one, was way in over my head on this)
