Setting up Outlook Express and the Address book for two users

Running OE 6 on XP Home. I am wondering what is the best way to set it up
for two users on a laptop. At home we have two separate machines so it is
easy.

On the laptop I set XP up so that there are two users. You select one or
the other during boot up. I have tried to set up OE in each virtual machine;
one for user A in "A" and one for user B in "B". Established two document
storage locations, two identities and OE just seemed to get confused.

In addition, I have tried to establish two Address Books. That doesn't seem
to want to work either.

Is there a document somewhere that goes into this? Any help?

Thanks

From OE HELP...

Setting up multiple identities
If there is more than one person in your house using the same computer for
e-mail, each person can have a separate mailbox in Outlook Express. This
means that each person can have separate messages, contacts, and personal
settings. This is made possible through the creation of multiple identities.
Once the identities are created, you can switch among them without having to
shut down your computer or lose your Internet connection.

To add a new identity
1 On the File menu, point to Identities, and then click Add New Identity.
2 Type the name of the new user.
3 If you want to include a password for this identity, select the Require a
password option, and then enter a password.

Outlook Express asks you if you want to log on as the new user. If you
answer yes, you will be prompted for information about your Internet
connection. If you answer no, the current user remains logged on.

To switch to a different identity
1 On the File menu, click Switch Identity.
2 Select the user you want to switch to.

For Address Book..

What are identities?
Creating identities is a way for several people to use Outlook Express and
the Address Book on the same computer. For example, you and a family member
may share a computer. If you each create an identity, you would each see
your own mail and your own contacts when you log on under your identity.
Once your identity is created, you can organize your contacts the way you
want them by creating subfolders.

Usually, you will create identities while you are using Outlook Express (or
other applications that use identities). You can create identities from your
Address Book only when you open your Address Book from the Start menu rather
than from Outlook Express. To open Address Book from the Start menu, click
Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Address
Book.

In

Each Windows user has an OE main identity.
Even though both Identities are labeled main identity, they are unique to
each user.

OE has one Address Book and use a folder for each Identity.
Only the folder for each Identity is visible from OE.
I don't understand why OE would be confused.

Expanding on Wes' post...

If your email addresses are "aliases" for one mailbox, you'll still need
Message Rules when using separate Identities and/or User Profiles.

Most families (an intentionally all-encompassing term) will have one Mail
Account with their one ISP subscription ($$/month for all). Most ISPs
provide you with multiple Addresses for the Mail Account (e.g., (e-mail address removed),
(e-mail address removed), etc.) but all of them "point" to the one mailbox. As such,
each Identity will need to use Message Rules so that only mail addressed to
them is downloaded into their Inbox.

The following refers to two addresses, but you should be able to follow it
and amend for three or more.

(e-mail address removed) and (e-mail address removed) are aliases for one Mail Account (mailbox). In
the Identity associated with (e-mail address removed), create a Message Rule stating,
"Where To or CC contains (e-mail address removed), Do not download it from the server"
and place this rule at the very top of the list.

Then create a similar rule for the Identity associated with (e-mail address removed)
directing any messages addressed to (e-mail address removed) not to be downloaded from the
server.

Also see MVP Tom Koch's fine pages on using Rules:

Why doesn't my rule work?

By default, each Identity will have its own, dedicated Address Book. See

Where did you get that ?

I've used (gasp) AOL (A LONG LONG time ago), a local ISP, Earthlink,
WorldNet, and Adelphia. I have NEVER seen any e-mail client d/l mail for
any account other than the one specified in the login info provided. Then
what is the sense of having separate e-mail accounts ?

You are just confusing the OP with this nonsense.

Is that signature accurate ? Are you REALLY an MVP ?

Friends

You folks got way beyond what I was trying and have succeded to do. I guess
I didn't explain myself well at the beginning. So...

I have an XP Home notebook. XP allows you to set up several "virtual"
machines within the one hardware machine. What I was trying to do was make
OE in each "virtual" machine truly independent; each with its own storage
folder and address book. Further, I want to copy two independent file
storage and address books from the two family desktops. After your
suggestions and a lot of fiddling I succeded.

First, I created two S/Ds for the data files from each desk top and copied
the files over. Second I created two S/Ds for the address book .WAB files
and coied them over. Then I started up the machine up, logged on to my
"virtual" machine and opened OE. Went to Options, maintenance, and changed
the default storage location to the S/D I'd created. OE found the files
transferred from the desktop. I then went to regedit and changed the address
book location. Closed everything, restarted and, voila, everything worked
like I wanted it to. OE has to stay in main identity for this to work.

I then restarted in the wife's "virtual" machine and repeated the process.
It worked!

What I didn't realize is that each "virtual" machine has its own independent
registry.

Thanks for the help.

I can cite scores of threads in OE newsgroups where this /was/ the problem
and the info I posted resolved it.
