I have a new computer and have a couple extra hard drives. I would like to
use 1 hard drive for exclusively for my daughter OR for a back up up the
first hard drive. It seems that any computer my daughter uses gets trash on
it for some unexplained reason. ie: tracking cookies or spy stuff. I don't
know if the AOL chat thing has anything to do with it or not BUT that is what
i'm dealing with.
With that said which would be more benificial? And If I do a seperate hard
drive for her do I install XP, office, nero etc. and all programs that she
would use on the 2nd hard drive? Space is not a problem and not looking for
cheap way out, just best way out.

Best way out = Another computer.

You would have to setup a dual-boot configuration and I suspect your
technical expertise is not up to that level since you do not understand how
the computer operates. Just having a second drive, with the programs
installed on it does not keep cookies, spyware, etc. off the primary boot
disk.
As Dave stated, if your daughter likes to surf and chat, and is not watching
the back door, you should get her a computer that she can screw up. Then
when she figures out that it is her fault she can no longer surf and chat
maybe she will start to watch the back door.

Get a separate computer for her and some drive imaging software. Take a
drive image when the system is running well and then restore it when it
goes south. She'll lose data and programs she installed in the interim
but then she might learn there's a price to pay for what one does.

Phil,

As mentioned by the others a seperate drive for her is not the answer.
However there are a few things you can do to cut down on "spy stuff" etc. I
assume you are a bit new to all this:

1) Ensure service pack 2 is installed from Microsoft
2) Install a virus checker-use it-update is every week (eg AVG) it is free
3) Install Spy ware detection software (eg Ad aware from Lavasoft) -use it
and update it weekly.
4) Install a firewall-there is one with sevice pack 2 but it is not very
good (Eg zone alarm) it is free.
5) Consider installing net nanny or similar - software that restricts your
daughters internet activities-if she can not go to the dodgy web sites she
can not get infected.
6) I dont know how old your daughter is and I dont want to alarm you but
be aware that it is not a good idea to let children roam the www totaly
unrestricted. If you are sensible about supervision you will be ok

A couple of hard disks for one computer, two separate user's, you say?

- One computer, two hard disks set up in an optimal configuration would be
best, with appropriate user-security-permissions set up in Windows, a good
firewall, anti-virus (like F-Prot, NOD32, Kaspersky and NOT symmantic,
McAfee) and all the anti-spyware you wish to put on. Basic maintenance like
cleaning unused, temp, user temp, temp internet files up. Occasionally
scanning for malware, and defragging every now and then. Back your data up
on some external medium.

- One computer, two hard disks. One boot per disk, 2 boots for one computer.
One set up for you, the other for your daughter (your little monster). Bit
more work involved if you want to do that then that's OK.

- Like every one else has said, two computers.

Best way out is to put a Linux distro on that second hard drive for use by
your daughter. She'll then have tons of FREE software to play with, no
problems with spyware, trojans, viruses or malware and can do everything
she can do with Windoze. It'll be free too without the necessity of having
to purchase a second Windoze license, like you'd have to do otherwise.

After you see what a great and stable operating system and how easy it is to
use, you might decide to install it on your hard drive. :-) Again, at no
cost to you.

This is what I did with my second hard drive: I purchased Casper from
Future System Solutions and backed up the entire first hard drive.
Booting from the second hard drive takes less than a minute when the
primary drive is corrupted.
Subsequent backups to keep the second hard drive up to date takes less
than five minutes.
I have no relationship with the company listed other than as a paid
customer.
