I couldn't find any place in Preferences to set Opera 8.54 as my
default browser. This little proggy makes such selections a snap:

If you want to set Opera as the default without using another
application, use the following steps. It's not very straightforward or
intuitive. The info is from the Opera KB.

<<The second time you run Opera, it will start displaying a dialog
asking if you want Opera to be your default browser. Even if you have
previously canceled this dialog, you can change the setting by doing the
following:

1 Go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Programs
2 Tick the checkbox for "Check if Opera is default browser on startup".
3 Next time you start Opera, answer "Yes" when the dialog asks you if
you want Opera to be the default browser on your computer.>>

The utility you mention is clearly easier. :)

Ya know, I must have looked at that Programs spot five times and never
saw the damn checkbox!!! Aaaarrrggghhh!!!

Well, it is handy and convenient. I dropped its icon down on the quick
launch desktop toolbar to remind me later on that it exists in case I
ever want to use it again. Thanks for the info.

But your directions are precise and don't require ading anything more to
this box. I, apparently, blew away something when I cleaned the registery
- some programs were bringing up IE and some Opera - following your
guidance I let Opera tell the OS that it was the default browser - again -
and it works nicely, thanks //al

al,

I'm glad to hear you got everything sorted out on your system. It's not
necessary to add the utility, but it may be easier for some to use to
change their default browser setting.
