Hello,

My associations are all accurate, and if items are saved to the desktop they
can be viewed. However, I am now unable to send out a word or excel
document. There's no association, even after all the defaults have been
checked. How can I fix this please? Pending documents to my client...
thank you, Kelli

Just how are you attaching the document, and what error message do
you get? Make sure the document is not open in any app while trying
to attach it.

The documents themselves no longer have the correct association icon, sucks
as the excel, and I choose to attach via, insert file attachment, and choose
it. In testing it by sending it to myself, I receive the standard "need to
set an association" error message when trying to open it.

I received some word documents from a client as well, that don't have the
icon pic on them either.

I realize I could save them on my desktop, but it doesn't fix the problem of
wanting to email the spreadsheet to someone else. Very confusing....sigh.

What exactly prevents you from emailing a spreadsheet to someone else?
Try these steps. Close the spreadsheet in Excel, or close Excel.
In Windows Mail, start a new message, then click on Attach.
From the browse window that opens, navigate to the desired document
and click on it. The document should attach to the message being composed.
At what step does this process fail, and what is the error message?

I am able to successfully attach the document. But the document itself no
longer has a program icon. For example, all other items in that file have
the Excel icon, but the one I want to attach does not. I attach it into my
email, send it to myself. I receive the email, open the email, click on the
attachment that has a blank icon, and I receive the message: Do you want to
open this file? I click on "open" and then I receive this:

[Window Title]
C:\Users\Kelli\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\J52T24J2\LMCA payroll07.xls

[Content]
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this
action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel.

[OK]

I don't understand why these documents have lost their program icons. I
also received an email from a client, full of word documents that were all
had blank doc icons too.

Thank you,
Kelli

I don't know why your icons are not correct. But, just because the icon
is not displaying correctly for *you* doesn't mean that when you send it,
the recipient would not be able to open that document. However, it is
generally not wise to open .doc or .xls documents from within Windows Mail.
A better strategy is to save the attachment first, then work with the
saved document. I have heard too many horror stories of users
who absentmindedly starting editing an attachment they had opened
from within their email, only to lose all their edits when the temporary
file closed.

I do have a possible fix for the .doc case:

Uncheck the option "Do not allow attachments ...".

We're often able to give more help to people who show us complete
error messages, not just a summary of them. Many users leave out
the parts we find useful in deciding what caused the error.
