I am having a problem with my XP Home related to services, and have found a
modification date (close to the date/time of the failure) on the
SERVICES.MSC file -- is this usual? I have another XP Home and an XP Pro,
and the file is dated in 2001.
Thanks for any information.

FWIW if you access services.msc e.g. right click and examine it's properties
the modified date changes. The original file on my machine was created on 18
August 2001 -size 33,464. It is now dated 31 August 2004 -size 34,816. I
think you may be barking up the wrong tree!

Try looking in Event Viewer for Error Reports and post copies here.

Make an exact note of the precise text of any error message. Minor
discrepancies can
make it harder to search for information about the error message.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event
Viewer.
When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID,
Source
and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click
for further information and you can copy using copy and paste.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the
error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two
pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your
message
(email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This will paste the
info from the
Event Viewer Error Report complete with links into the message. Make sure
this is
the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Gerry,
Thanks much for the info.
Barking up the wrong tree, perhaps.
Ok, here is something you can chew on:
The base problem is that there is no internet, no LAN access, and the
desktop/start bar hangs after boot. So if I IPCONFIG /RENEW, I get this: "An
operation was atttempted on something that is not a socket."
Now armed with this info, I have found the link to repair the Winsock
registry settings.
Installed and used NETDIAG /test:winsock, and it said "Failed to get UDP
packet size information."
I deleted the registry entries, rebooted, had the same problem, got to
Network connections, Properties, and Tcp/IP is there (instructions are to
install it) -- cannot uninstall it. What now?

Side note: I have a VPN connection on that machine -- any bells there?
Thanks.

Do you have a System Restore point from before the problem started?

Gerry,
Nope. System Restore was turned off by the GameXP (to optimize performance
for games -- modifies registry and disables services). GameXP crashed at one
point, and left a mess. With it, later, I restored the original XP settings,
but no help from that.
Yeah, system restore was a thought -- days ago.
Thanks.

Any chance the NIC went bad? Its properties indicate it is working properly.
And netdiag indicated Tcp/IP was good but UPD was bad.
Where can I look for UDP configuration?
Thanks.
Ken

FWIW,
Without finding any more info, or receiving any other responses, I crossed
my fingers and went through the Windows install, to repair the existing
installation. It appears to have fixed the problem, without any ill effects.
Thanks.
